About The Society Syndicate

Ashleigh Dempster & Amanda Blakley are cultural curators and co-founders of The Society Global, a “culture club for the creative class” in Toronto, New York and more. Each week come back as they share some cultural crumbs from the front lines.

Destined for Design

Upon meeting people abroad and telling them where we are from, they always love to hear about Toronto or tell us about the time they have spent in our fair city. Culturites are proud Torontonians and love to promote homegrown talent from culinary artists to visual artists, musicians to technicians and film makers to bakers—Toronto is brimming with creative folk! Our mission with The Society is to create a platform for local artists to connect with other Culturites in the hope of propelling their careers to the next level. In this post, we are proud to promote some local design talent (many of whom also happen to be members of The Society).

Our top 6 aesthetes:

Alison Milne

The divine Miss Milne is a design powerhouse. Not only does she create spectacular interiors, but she also designs and customizes one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture that look more like art than utilitarian everyday fixtures. Her studio also doubles as a gallery and we hear she is bringing a certain Berlin-based artist’s work in this fall.

Greta Constantine

Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong are Toronto’s fashion darlings. Not only are these two incredibly stylish and lovable, but they also have a special knack for making the female body look divine with very little embellishment – just sexy cuts and simple fabric. We hope to sport many more Greta creations for years to come!

Jessica Kelly

Owner and operator of her namesake design firm, Jessica Kelly Design (JKD), Jessie’s clean, simple style is apparent in everything she touches – her design aesthetic is timeless and elegant. Plus we always love to have her on our crew when sailing as she makes a great skipper!

Roy Banse

RoyBanseDesign has been taking over Canada these days with some large scale projects. His amazing design ethos is spreading like wildfire and we couldn’t be happier for him. Check out his recent work at the new Thompson Toronto (including custom furniture for their hotel rooms) and Böhmer restaurant.

Jennifer Ferreira

With her fashion (and fashionable) background, its no surprise her approach to design is so refined, crisp and clean. We can’t get enough of her custom furniture & blinds.

Jeremy Laing

Culturites were recently introduced to Mr. Laing and immediately went home and googled his work. Of course we fell in love with his sophisticated lines and intellectual design philosophy. We are completely lusting after his fall/winter 2010 collection.
