Members of The Society had the pleasure of screening the much buzzed about (and now with cult status cred) documentary, Bill Cunningham, New York in Miami and Toronto.
In Miami, members gathered at hip new gallery-cum-theatre, O-Cinema and sipped Zacapa Rum cocktails and munched on organic fare before making their way past the DKNY Hosiery gifting lounge. Meanwhile in Toronto, members were treated to the viewing of the film at the screening room of the Freed Development, Thompson Hotel.
Over the past thirty years, Bill Cunningham has shot, edited and produced the legendary “On The Street” fashion column in The New York Times. Not jaded by celebrity worship, Bill's photography documents how fashion is altered to adjust to one's personal taste. His strict moral conduct combined with his insurmountable passion, make his photographs some of the most honest, vivid and revealing documentation of culture in both the 20th and 21st century. More than a fashion photographer, the film showcases Bill as a veritable cultural anthropologist.
"What amazed us about the film (and we don't think we are alone on this) was the true passion and love that Bill Cunningham puts into his work. He is a master, a perfectionist and leaves no stone unturned when shooting and compiling his column. Bill truly cares about his subjects and only wants to paint them in the most
positive light. As we see through his photos, style is subjective. There is no right or wrong way to wear an outfit and even at 80 years old, Bill continues to push the limits by encouraging the general public to embrace their individual style and be proud to share it with others.
