About May Globus

Vancouver City Editor May Globus is obsessed with the sartorial and all that surrounds it: art, design, culture, music and film. Oh, and she really likes writing about it, too. A left coast girl at heart, her Sweetspot finds just might show why the westside really is the best side.

It's A Wrap

the view from vancity: sabai thai spa body wrap canada, Vancouver (Sep.14.11)

I had been toying around with the thought of going on a cleanse for the past few weeks, like of the juice or master kind (a friend of mine swears by it).

After some more hemming and hawing, I concluded that detoxification with just straight lemon juice and cayenne pepper for 10 whole days was going to make me very, very hangry (for those unfamiliar with the term, that's hungry and angry).

So I decided to detoxify in a way that seemed to be most enjoyable to me: a body wrap at Sabai Thai Spa.

The room.

A dimly lit room, the lullaby of instrumental music on the speakers, the melodic lilt of my masseuse Arong's voice and a robust wrap treatment were all I needed to rid myself of summer toxins, the kind that built over consecutive months of patio drinks, al fresco dinners and gelato.

The first order of business was exfoliating every inch my arms, legs and body with lemongrass and turbinado sugar scrub — once Arong was done this, it was very clear I hadn't had such smooth baby skin since the early '80s. This was followed by a session of being slathered in white clay mud, before getting wrapped up in foil and laid to rest for 20 mins. There I lay, in my manmade cocoon, fully enjoying the adult swaddle (while being equal parts fidgety for being so swaddled up, but that's just me).

Tray of goodies.

I could literally feel the toxins seeping out of their hiding places, preparing to expelled in a warm shower post-unwrap.

After padding to the shower in a fuzzy robe for a warm rinse off, Arong massaged away the last bit of those toxins, starting at the legs, working toward my arms and onto my back and upper chest. Any stress, tension and muscle knots seemed to vanish with every steady knead. She finished the treatment off with a head massage, then left me alone in the room in my state of bliss and with a renewed system (and a hot cup of tea before I left).

If the Blueprint Cleanse or Paleo Diet isn't your thing, but you want to purify, this body wrap might be just the thing you need. I left Saba Thai Spa feeling revived, clean and ready for the new season.

There's nothing like starting fall than with a clean bill of health — and a soothed soul, too.
