Looking towards Vancouver 2010 has set off some Calgary Olympic nostalgia. Here’s a look at some of the most memorable moments of the ’88 games.
Figure Skating
The Battle of the Brians, Elizabeth Manley’s surprise silver, and an Ice Dance bronze— this marquee event had more drama (and tears) than daytime TV.

Olympic Plaza
Still used for various events throughout the year (and public ice skating), this open outdoor space was home to many rousing (and free!) medal ceremonies and concerts during the games.

Olympic Park
Who can forget the Jamaican Bobsled team’s crash down the track, and then their victorious walk with the sled above their heads? (Check out the movie Cool Runnings, inspired by their Calgary run.)

Venues, Venues, Venues
Without the ’88 Games, our fair city would be without our beloved Saddledome and Olympic Oval, just to name two.

Robyn Perry
Before notable athletes and dignitaries started receiving the honour of lighting the flame, an unknown 12-year-old was seen by billions (on her tiptoes!) lighting the Olympic flame to start the Calgary games.
