Best Breakfasts

Calgary (Apr.02.07)

It is, after all, the most important meal of the day. (At least it’s always been touted as being so.) While some of us tend to skip it for extra snooze time, do yourself a favour: Set your alarm ahead an hour, cut the mane-coiffing to a minimum (the humanity!), and indulge in a breakfast from our Best Of list that will have you roaring through the rest of the day.
    pancakes
  1. Best waffles: Cora’s Breakfast and Lunch
    4600 130 Ave S.E.; 403-265-7545
For those wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth, try the freshly made waffles with fresh (not frozen or covered in syrup) fruit. Also served with their signature custard, the fruit/waffle combo can be as exotic as you like, with your choice of bananas, kiwis, strawberries, pineapple, watermelon, strawberries, starfruit or blackberries. ($10.75)

  2. Best value: Nellie’s on 4th
    2308 4 St. S.W.; 403-209-2708
Even hardy morning eaters will be hard-pressed to finish this tongue-smacking Nellie’s combo: Three eggs, ham or bacon, hearty hash browns, Nellie’s signature pancakes (try the banana), and those adorable little side muffins will have you full through lunch and beyond. ($8.95)

  3. Best pancakes: Pfanntastic Pannenkoek Haus
    2439 54 Ave. S.W.; 403-243-7757; www.pfanntasticpannekoek.com
This Dutch treat has people lining up outside the doors most days, and why not? More than 80 varieties of savoury and sweet crepes, each delectable 12”-concoction has a variety of ingredients baked right into its thin batter. But don’t let the thinness fool you — one is enough to satisfy the heartiest of breakfast appetites. Try the potato/bacon/onion crepe served with sour cream. ($8.50)

  4. Best eggs: The River Café
    Prince’s Island Park; 403-261-8795; www.river-cafe.com
You might just have to squeeze in an extra set of sit-ups before (and after) this breakfast treat, as it is not a friend of your waistline. In fact, we do believe they are enemies. In any event, the Elk Bacon Benedict is worth a couple acts of contrition. Elk sirloin (much more sophisticated than regular ham, no?) is served with soft boiled eggs and sauced with a smooth brown butter hollandaise like no other. ($16)

  5. Best coffee: Diner Deluxe
    804 Edmonton Trail N.E.; 403-276-5499; www.dinerdeluxe.com
For those who can’t imagine starting the day off without a rockin’ cup of joe, there ain’t no better (Starbucks, eat your corporate heart out) than the bottomless cups here. Coming from a roaster in Invermere, B.C. (Kicking Horse Coffee), it’s the best way to start the most important meal of the day. For some added sweetness, try the Maple Caramel Latte. (Coffee $2.25, Maple Caramel Latte $4)
