Easing into Organic

Toronto (Apr.16.07)

Some converted years ago, others call it a fad and a few may even say sham, but we know what we like — and more times than not it comes from something organic. Really, if it’s good enough to start with, why would you want to meddle and mess with a bunch of additives? Here are our favourite ways to dip a toe or dive right into the “O” way of life with this week’s Best Of easing into organic list...
    organic
  1. Delivered: Green Earth Organics
    416-285-5300; greenearthorganics.com
Convenience is no longer an issue thanks to this organic delivery program. Sign up for one of three box sizes ($36-$60) and receive weekly or bi-weekly arrivals of delicious seasonal produce (which you can even tweak to your tastes) and tasty extras from bread to cookies and more.

  2. Well-raised: Cumbrae’s
481 Church St., 416-923-5600; www.cumbraes.com (more locations listed online)
Sure, George Orwell was talking about Russia when he wrote that all animals are equal…but some animals are more equal than others. We’ll take naturally raised over hormone crazed any day when it comes to dining. These guys only sell the finest and have a great selection of prepared dished, too, for when you just don’t want to cook.

  3. Educated: Whole Foods Market
    87 Avenue Rd., 416-944-0500; http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/canada/toronto/index.html
Still a little confused what all the organic-this and farm-fresh-that is actually about? Whole Foods’s Toronto site keeps a calendar of one-night classes covering everything from natural skin care to making your own baby food. Most cost $5 and attendance comes with a $5 gift card to use at Whole Foods when you’re done.

  4. Sweetened: Choco Sol
    720 Bathurst St.; www.chocosoltraders.com
We like our chocolate dark, rich and actually take subtly sweet over super sugary any day. This Annex find understands our style and delivers with a unique co-operative project that produces artisanal solar-powered goods and connects with the traditions of Mexican cacao roasting. Natural, high quality and, ultimately, still a chocolate fix for any craving.

  5. Just like Mom: Daily Apple
    416-899-1990; www.dailyapple.ca
If chocolate muffins and shepherd’s pie are the kinds of homey treats you easily identify with, our favourite catering company is worth a call. By tweaking family recipes (like using spelt for the muffins and a sweet potato crust for the pie), the end results are always familiar with a delicious twist of the unexpected.
