Shoe Stores

Vancouver (Apr.09.07)

If you thought a little (or a lot) of wet weather could dampen our shoe-stylish spirits, think again. You, too, can kick the rainy day blues and kick up your heels instead (stop hopping over puddles) with this week's Best Of shoe stores list. You'll be well heeled, rounded, pointed and, well, you get the idea.
    Shoes
  1. Best Italian: Kalena's
    1526 Commercial Dr.; 604-255-3727; www.kalenashoes.com
Our first choice for ultra-trendy and fashion-forward pumps, boots and heels is this haute spot on the Drive. Amazing Italian leathers and friendly service guarantee that you'll be the only one wearing the shoes of the moment — all straight from the runways of Milan and Rome. (And the warm European hospitality doesn't hurt a bit either.)

  2. Designer heels: Holt Renfrew Shoe Salon
    633 Granville St.; 604-681-3121; www.holtrenfrew.com
Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, and Alejandro Ingelmo are just a few of the favourite men you'll love to try on for size (if not take home). And you'll be stumbling over the extensive number of collections this fine Canadian establishment has to offer. Although “the boys” will cost you a pretty penny, the jealous gasps are worth it.

  3. Earth Vegan with an attitude: Gravity Pope
    2205 West 4th Ave.; 604-731-7673; www.gravitypope.com
Religious experiences aside, you'll reach shoe nirvana while playing with the over 1,700 different types of footwear (from 70 designers). Forget the racks and shelves – all are scattered throughout the store like tiny beads, so they're ultra accessible. Petting, gushing and pining not included in the sale price.

  4. For your inner skater girl: Live Stock
    239 Abbott St.; 685-1433; www.deadstock.ca
You know those days when chilling in a pair of old jeans, a tiny tee and a pair of flats is the only thing you want to do? (Only a very limited pair of the latest Marc Jacobs flats will do, of course) Stock managers at this Gastown hideaway bring in the most exclusive pairs of kicks for an easy, breezy (and sometimes costly) weekend.

  5. Affordable vintage: True Value Vintage
    710 Robson St.; 604-685-5403
When you're in the market for cowboy boots that were actually designed for a little riding, or Mary Jane's circa 1950s, don't let the dodgy exterior scare you from going underground. You'll love rummaging through piles of vintage leather and lace to make your feet happy. And we heard that if you ask, the helpful staff will even put things on “order” and hold for pick-up.
