Mortimer Snodgrass
montreal musings Montreal

We love to sing the praises of our favourite stores, and Mortimer Snodgrass has probably topped many of your lists out there. Best gift store, best quirky products, best birthday cards… (It’s certainly been mentioned on a few of ours.)
When I first passed by the store on St-Paul St. back in January and saw it was closed, I swear, my heart must have stopped. I couldn’t imagine that the beloved institution was closing, even with the shaky economy. But I was wrong. (And couldn't have been more thrilled!)

Thankfully, it was just relocating to a bigger and better location. It’s still in Old Montreal, but now just east of the Basilica at 56 Notre-Dame W. Spacious and bright, with beautiful exposed brick, a reading lounge to peruse their quirky book selection, and over 7000 of their funky products to choose from. Apparently, business is booming.
In fact, bubbly co-owner Virginia told me that they – she and hilarious husband/co-owner Jay – are probably approached once a week by people who are serious about franchising their store. But for now at least, they’re happy the way things are, ensuring complete control over the products, placement and ambience of the boutique.
I discovered some great stuff on my last shopping trip, including this Indoor Hawaiian Noni Tree that not only bears fruit but also cleans the air, and this Eco-Culture Organic Growing Kit that grows indoor flowers or herbs. Though I would love some Intriguing Basil, the Fragrant Moonflower Multi-Coloured Sunrose sounds pretty enchanting, doesn’t it?
And this adorable guy had me in stitches. His Name? E.Coli
