There are many reasons for a designer to show his/her collection outside of Fashion Week: collection ready early, collection not ready whatsoever, cost, desire for a different venue (there are only so many ways to dress up a runway)…
There were two collections to check out last week before the official launch of Montreal Fashion week today. And both seemed to be after the novelty of a funky location.
One was FINN, who partnered with Little Burgundy to present their Spring 2010 collection inside the barn-like loft of Le Saint-Gabriel. (So the timing is technically way behind, but it’s refreshing to see a show and know you can go out and actually find the clothing in stores!)
Simple and chic items that had me longing for March 31st. Nothing drastically new here but sometimes it’s in the details; flattering necklines, irregular stitching, dart pockets, suspenders… These are clothes that I would definitely wear. And I love the simplified gladiator sandals.
The second was the inimitable Andy The-Ahn, who debuted a new logo and a new, edgier look to his collection. Thus eXcentris was the perfect place to present the clothes, a recently redesigned venue where art and technology fuse together in futuristic fashion.
His designs always merge subtlety with contemporary sophistication, but something about this collection is different. I detected a sombre note in some of the pieces.
