Montreal Fashion Week, Day One

montreal musings Montreal (Mar.02.10)

The 18th edition of Montreal Fashion Week officially kicked off yesterday (though I’ve already been blogging about a few of the off-site shows), and we’re heralding a return to black. Spring/Summer 2010 was a very colourful affair, but memories of that bright time have been all but dashed. Black is it, with bits of grey and nude thrown in for good measure.

Mélissa Nepton was first up, and it was a layering masterpiece. Coolly styled, with kimono jackets or shawls draped over leggings and see-through tops that looked like flimsy leggings.

Nadya Toto marked her return to the runway with a show that bespoke 80’s television – Dynasty, to be exact. Glittery dresses and huge shoulders were a big part of the collection.

Muse by Christian Chenail featured a return to the military look for Fall/Winter 2010-2011. Plenty of long coats, jodhpur trousers and a few dresses thrown into the mix. A mute palette of black, blue and grey dominated the collection. The overall feeling was one of playing it safe - I feel like I’ve seen these designs from him before.

Marie Saint Pierre presented a collection all about jersey – and black. If you’re searching for new travel clothes, her boutique on de la Montagne should be your next destination. None of the body-hugging designs will ever wrinkle. Ever. (They wouldn’t dare.)

But beware the odd Medusa serpent-like accessories on the outside. Look past them and see the true nature of the clothes. (Tough sometimes, I know!)

Last but never least, rumours of the demise of Helmer’s couture line last season we’re greatly exaggerated. (Though easy to understand, given the sombre mood and funeral procession.) He came back with a runway show dedicated to Haiti – raising funds for Handicap International Canada – and the only colour-full collection of the evening.

Yes, it was his trademark patchwork design on everything from bodysuits to gowns. I don’t mind it in small doses, but it was quite blinding out there. This lovely lilac chiffon creation was breathtaking though.

It will be interesting to see which trends hit the runway today. Want to find out for yourself? Pick up your tickets for Montreal Fashion Week.
