Montreal Fashion Week, Day Four
montreal musings Montreal
(Mar.05.10)
Day four of Montreal fashion week brought things to a close with a bit of something we’ve been lacking: colour, bold cuts and some pretty crazy styling.
The annual Télio Design Competition invited fashion students from across Canada to submit designs for the theme of Art-à-porter. Their guidelines? To create “a unique, original, high-end and timeless design.” Which basically means anything goes!

And anything did, as some crazy and wonderful designs came down the runway, including these four winning entries. Love the 1st prize winning jacket, with intricate collars and sleeves that zip off.

Soia & Kyo were dependable as ever, with plenty of slim-fitting coats and cinched waists in a variety of shades. They debuted their first menswear collection as well, so spread the word among your male friends. This white coat reminded me of a Denis Gagnon silhouette from F/W 2009-2010…

The show that started his love affair with the zipper….
Which culminated in last night’s finale…with this dress made entirely of zippers.

It all started backstage, where the Bun Brigade paid tribute to Princess Leia.
The show was like something from a galaxy far, far away.
Masterfully cuts jackets, crocheted sweaters, with items of jersey thrown into the mix. I’ve never seen so much skin on his runway before.

I always love Gagnon’s shows; take the performance art I was referring to yesterday and multiply that by a thousand. Though it seems that the more his star rises, the less commercial his clothes become. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

A documentary on Gagnon called Je m’appelle Denis Gagnon/My name is Denis Gagnon will be released March 21st. Perhaps this will shed a little light on the man behind the frames (and the zipper headdress).
