Sugaring Off
montreal musings Montreal
(Mar.17.10)
The sap is on tap. Thanks to this fantastically early spring (as I type it’s a balmy 12 degrees!) the timeless tradition of sugaring off has already begun.
There are plenty of cabanes à sucre near Montreal; jump in your car and pick a direction, any direction. But what if you can’t bum a ride off of the island? Don’t enjoy sleigh rides? Or simply don’t have the time for an all-day adventure? Scena has come to the rescue.
I blogged about this Old Port destination when it first opened last summer, and it’s quickly evolved from housing a simple supper lounge to throwing gourmet events, founding Origine Bistro and even hosting the circus.
Now they’ve opened La Cabane, bringing the sugar shack to us. A modern space with an updated but traditional Quebecois menu, it’s now open Tuesday to Friday from 5pm onwards (check online for the number and time of seatings) as well as Saturdays and Sundays for brunch. Perfect way to bring the custom a little closer to home. Hurry though, as it’s only open until April 11th.
Can’t get enough of all things maple? Then you’ll love the yummy new line of bath & body products from Montreal fav Bella Pella based on the sweet sap. The body scrub is only $19.95 and is irresistibly delicious. (Just try and not dip a spoon into the jar, I dare you.) Totally vegan, it’s made with real maple syrup, brown sugar, coconut oil and shea butter. And the body bar ($6.95) is 100% glycerine, leaving skin soft and clean.
Just a few more ways to enjoy our national treasure. Wait, isn’t that Michael Bublé?
