Yeh! Yogourt
montreal musings Montreal
(Aug.04.10)
I love success stories, and I love local success stories even more. So when I discovered that Yeh! Yogourt was opening two new locations in Montreal – a downtown flagship and one on Monkland Ave. in NDG – with expansion into the US and across Canada already in the works, I bounced downtown to get the scoop (pun definitely intended).
Yeh! Yogourt opened in June last year and quickly became a summer hotspot in the Plateau. Owners Grace Yeh and Jean-Daniel Nadeau were the first to introduce the concept of self-serve frozen yogurt to Canada, correctly guessing it would be well-received. After all, who wouldn’t want to walk into a frozen yogurt shop and realize that they can custom create their own sundae? No more skimpy portions at exorbitant prices.
Jean-Daniel is originally from Joliette (where he’s now something of a town hero), while Grace is from the US. It was on a trip to her home state of California that Jean-Daniel was introduced to frozen yogurt and developed an instant addiction, sometimes driving 45 minutes just to procure some. They did their research and discovered that there was nothing like this back home. Voilà.
Yeh! offers more than 40 toppings and 12 rotating flavours of low-calorie, non-fat frozen yogurt at each store. Packed with prebiotics and probiotics (“pre” being the food for the “pro”), this treat gives the immune system a boost and is all made naturally and locally (giving our economy a boost). Eco-surprise: the takeout bowls are non-waxed, made without petroleum and are biodegradable, as are the cutlery and takeout bags. Really raises the bar on the term "guilt-free indulgence." .jpg)
I walked out of there with a healthy-but-no-less-delicious original version topped with fruit. Next time I’ll try something a bit naughtier. Peanut butter and cheesecake yogurts are calling my name, though it's the toppings that are truly decadent (and only half of them at that). I’m dreaming of Reese’s Pieces, Irish Crème, Dulce de Leche… What's your favourite combination?
***Visit Yeh! Yougurt's 1651 St-Catherine St. location and you'll receive $1 dollar off the new Sweetspot-inspired, limited-edition cherry-flavoured yogurt. Offer good until August 11th.
