Montreal Musings: Grange Vin + Bouffe canada, Montreal
(Dec.07.11)
My personal quest to discover the wine bars of Montreal continues. (I have a serious wine tasting reputation to maintain.)
The first one I ever tried several years ago was BU. I love their tasting trios: great way to try several new wines at once without breaking the piggybank – or getting stuck with a crummy wine.
Next came Pullman, where the wine and the food are exceptional. So when I was invited to check out Grange Vin + Bouffe, I couldn’t say no.

I loved the ambiance from the moment I walked in. The warm staff, adorable in their checked shirts, match the contemporary but inviting décor. We were seated at the bar, which I normally hate, but to my surprise this bar was as comfortable as a table, and provided the perfect vantage point to people-watch too.
We started with a flute of Prosecco and splash of iced cider – lovely. The tapas were the perfect portion for sharing, though the food was so delicious, I was tempted to hoard it all for myself. A mini veggie burger (with yummy homemade ketchup), fragrant salmon tartar and warm beet salad were delicious. But my coup de coeur was the so-called ‘healthy poutine’: green beans with fresh cheddar, caramelized onions and house mayo. Divine.

As for the wine pairing, it was stellar. The menu has a nice selection to choose from but we let our server hold the reins. A slightly nutty Chenin Blanc was perfect with the poutine and tartar. A crisp Pinot Blanc cut the acidity of a fresh raspberry vinaigrette and salty fried cheese. Don't even get me started on the dessert... (Two words: espresso shot.)
Overall, a fabulous night out. Great food, great wine, not too expensive. Relaxed, unpretentious, but if you want to dress up, you’ll still fit in. The only conumdrum? That their menu is changing as of today, which means I'll have to head back even sooner than I had planned. (They promise the favourites will remain.)
