As summer ends, we always console ourselves with fresh apparel. We knew our rampant consumerism wasn’t good for our wallets – but we were surprised to find it’s also bad for the environment. Did you know that each Canadian is responsible for 30 pounds of textile waste per year?
How are we lessening our carbon fashion footprint? We’re participating in the First Annual Back to School Swaparama, held by Le Marche Mtl. on September 19. Until then, we’ll be dropping off our pre-loved (but clean and mended) bags, accessories, shoes and clothing to earn ourselves a $5 ticket to the event. (If we don’t make it down, we can still go by paying $20 at the door.)
On the night of the swap, we’ll get a bag to fill with once-loved items - and there is no limit to how much we can stuff. Sound like heaven? Throw in cupcakes and cocktails, and the fact that the profits raised go to an eco-friendly cause, and we’re ready to cut down our textile waste to zero.
Besides, 30 pounds is too much guilt to carry around all fall.
