Your Top 10

week of November 8thcanada (Nov.08.10)

You’re more likely to work out with a buddy, right?

Well, you’re more likely to save money with some support, too.

Your Top 10 is a weekly feature that shares 10 money-savvy tips – contributed by our sweet and centsible readers. In no particular order, check out this week’s real-life reader suggestions (and come back next week to check out 10 more!).

  1. When I change my toothbrush, I use the old one for cleaning in the bathroom around the tapes and cleaning jewelry. – nelliebell

  2. If you have clothing that are slightly too big (or small) consider having them altered. Alterations could cost less than purchasing a new item. - The Last Green

  3. I say always shop around for any item you want to purchase as there is always one place that is cheaper than all the rest!  Don't be afraid to look!! - smelo1

  4. Instead of buying things, I make them if possible, cookies, a new tote bag, laptop sleeve, etc. - jomm22

  5. Unfortunately, I have a pretty nasty coffee habit. I probably spend more than I should on going out for a coffee every week. Now I impose a "coffee penalty" on myself. Every time I make a purchase, I break a bill instead of paying with change. The leftover change gets rolled and put in my savings account. So my guilt turns into something good! – sweetkeet

  6. I use a daily spending spreadsheet where I track all my transactions.  It really helps you see the bigger picture and where you can save money. – jimrhynold

  7. We're having our 1st child with the hope of many more to come. Because we want the best for our babies but are tight on cash, we've decided to decorate the baby room gender neutral. This helps in the future, we won't have to buy everything a second time around, especially if we have a boy and a girl! Gender neutral designs help the purse strings :) – lisarugge

  8. I like to "shop" my own closet. Sometimes just going through it helps me rediscover something I forgot a long time ago. Other times, small changes, like changing the buttons on a blazer can give an item of clothing a fresh new look instead of buying something new! - j3chow

  9. My husband and I are trying to conserve what we use now more than ever.  Rather than keeping some lights on, we open all the curtains in the house.  We unplug all electronics that are not being used.  We have since saved $7 in our electric bill this month. – dinaishavingababy

  10. I have a Bernese Mountain Dog. Instead of spending the money on a groomer I learned to do it myself. He is calm during the session because he trusts me and I really like the dollars I save.  – willow
