How does one perform at Carnegie Hall? Practice. Lots of practice. But how does our little squirt get to play chess with the best of the best? By shelling out $5.
Tossing aside the video console and cords, we bring our second grader to the Vancouver Chess Centre on Tuesday nights. Before we begin imagining our tot taping the centre of her glasses and pulling her pants to her armpits, we remember that she'll play against former B.C. chess champion Tony Deline. A wiz with youth, we know Tony won't give any humdrum lectures about the history of the game or quizzes about defensive gambits used by famous Russian players. It's just loads of fun. What's got us sold are the $5 drop-in evenings ($2 for B.C. Chess Federation members) to have our kiddo learn from a champ.
But she's not the only one. Word has it, Tony is talking of starting a parallel parent chess play group. We'll just have to learn how not to be sore losers against our little chess genius.
