Now that we’ve got our Road Trip Essentials down, we’re itching for an adventure out of town. Here are some mini-road trips that won’t break the bank or have you packing for days.
One-Hour Drive: Peterborough Zoo
Looking for a slight change in scenery after umpteen trips to the Toronto Zoo? With 27 exhibits, 40 species, a fabulous children’s playground and splash pad, and a vintage miniature train to ride, your kids will go ape for the Peterborough Zoo. The best part? Admission and parking are—are wait for it – are free.
Two-Hour Drive: Plunge! Aqua Centre
Nestled in the village of Collingwood’s Blue Mountain Resort, the indoor and outdoor pools, rope swings, slides and hot tubs at Plunge! cater to the interests of all age levels.
But what we love best is its proximity to accommodations and endless attractions. While our water babies are busy splashing, mamas can take a tranquil nature hike, float to the top of the Niagara Escarpment in a charming gondola or get a well-deserved mani-pedi at any number of nearby spas.
Three-Hour Drive: Haliburton Highlands
Turn the speed of life down a notch. With dozens of Haliburton area B&Bs, resorts and cottage rentals available on breathtakingly gorgeous lakes, you will have no choice but to slow your breathing and put your feet up.
Don’t forget to stop for Ingoldsby Junction butter tarts (best you’ll ever have, we promise!). For heart-stopping adventure, visit Haliburton Forest for A Walk in the Clouds Canopy Tour ($95/adult, $70/youth 10-16) or visit the Wolf Centre (free with Walk in the Clouds package or $9/adults, $6/children, $20/family). There’s so much to explore that you’ll want to stay for days.
There’s nothing like a mini-vacay to help us appreciate what’s just outside our backyard.
