10 Things to do in Yaletown

Vancouver (Aug.19.11)

While Yaletown is packed with young professionals, it’s also home to lots of kids, making it a great place to spend a day with the family (that not everyone automatically thinks of).

Best for a Walk: Seawall
Start your day off with a leisurely stroll along the seawall. Your kids will love the big boats and kayakers floating by. If you’re amazingly lucky, you might even spot a whale (it’s happened).

Best for Fitness Classes: Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre
The Roundhouse has a packed schedule of physical activities, including a great selection of mom and baby classes ranging from dance to pilates, plus a dad and kids sportball class. Check their schedule and pre-register or drop in.

Best for Baby Supplies: Saf & Benjamin
We love this store that’s full of hip accessories, clothes and gifts for babies, including bike carriers, diaper bags, toys, and bedding. We also love that the fishies swimming in their tank distract the little ones while we shop.
1081 Marinaside Cresc.. (at Boathouse Mews); 778-328-8194; www.safandbenjamin.com

Best for Boat Lovers: Aquabus
If your kids love boats, be sure to take them for a mini-cruise on the Aquabus ($8 adults, $4 kids), Vancouver’s rainbow-striped iconic water taxi that makes several stops in False Creek, including in Yaletown.

Best for Supper: Yaletown Brewing Company
While a pub might seem an unlikely place to take little ones, Yaletown Brewing Company boasts one of the best kids’ menus and entertainment packs around (we love their waxy, bendy wikki stix).
1116 Hamilton St. (at Helmcken St.); 604-688-0064;www.markjamesgroup.com/yaletown.html

Best for Chocolate Lovers: Ganache Patisserie
While your kids might think you’re stopping at Ganache Patisserie to get them some chocolate, we all know it’s really for you (shh…we won’t tell). Rich, decadent, unique and hand-crafted, these treats are truly to die for.
1262 Homer St. (at Drake St.); 604-899-1098; www.ganacheyaletown.com

Best for Park Play: Coopers’ Park
Coopers’ Park is just one of the neighbourhood parks that will keep your kids busy. While the playground is fun, the real attraction is the dog park where the little ones will delight in watching four-legged friends at play.

Best for Date Night: Jump Gymnastics
If you decide you want to explore Yaletown on your own for a few hours, take advantage of Jump Gymnastics date nights ($24). Drop the kids off for gymnastics, games and crafts, then pick them up a couple hours later.
101-837 Beatty St. (at Smithe St.); 604-568-9690;www.jumpgymnastics.ca

Best for Bikers: Reckless Bikes
Want to zip around in style? Grab a bike rental and add on a trailer from Reckless Bikes. It’s a great way for the whole family to see the sites quickly (plus, the kids can sit in the trailer and relax while you do all the work).
110 Davie St. (at Pacific Blvd.); 604-648-2600;www.reckless.ca
