Our kids have been cracking eggs and stirring batter since they could stand, but lately we’ve noticed that their curiosity is greater than the culinary skills we have to share.
When we found a summer camp that suits our budding chef to a teaspoon, we jumped at the chance. Belly Catering founder Nicole Kruzick is opening the professional kitchen at the back of her sweet little café to the pre-tween set (6 to 8 year-olds) in the hopes of introducing the pleasure – and mad skillz – found in cooking. Her Kids Cooking Camps ($150/week includes lunch and recipes) still have spots for July 13-17 and August 10-14 (10:30am-1pm).
Each day has a themed menu that allows kids to get hands-on. They might whip up a pizza from scratch one day, learn the art of homemade spaghetti and meatballs another and throw together chop sui and fried rice the next. (Bonus: They get to bring the recipes home so they can replicate their skills in your kitchen.)
On our recent visit, our little sous chef got comfortable peeling garlic, reading recipes and measuring ingredients under Nicole’s patient guidance. (All we had to do was help eat the scrumptious fruits of the lesson.) Presto! Dinner prep just went from put out to pampered.
