What do dads really want for Father’s Day? That’s a good question. Although I’m a dad, I’m no expert. I’ve only had one Father’s Day. I even had to Google the exact date of Father’s Day. I knew it was in June and on a Sunday. It’s just there were four to choose from. I’ll save you the Googling and mention that it’s this Sunday, June the 19th.
Now onto that question, I’ve given it some thought and compiled a list. So here’s my Father’s Day gift giving guide.
Tools
Assumptions would dictate that all men are good with tools and as such a wrench would be a good gift. I’m not sure I’d know what to do with a wrench. Other than throw it in plans. I would however accept it with a smile.
Sleeping In
No matter whether you pee sitting down or standing up, every single parent is sleep deprived. Gaining some extra sleep even if it is a few fleeting moments is priceless.
The Worst Gift You’ve Ever Received for Mother’s Day
Men have the bad habit of giving women gifts that they want for themselves. It happens. So for Father’s Day remember; any gift that would make a bad Mother’s Day gift will usually make a great Father’s Day gift. May I even suggest re-gifting that terrible gift?
Brunch
Why do mothers get brunch exclusivity? It’s like they’ve trademarked the consumption of eggs between the hours between 9am and 2pm. Fathers like brunch. Steak is a brunch menu staple. Put two and two together.

Bacon
Every man I know would love the gift of bacon for Father’s Day. Except the ones that keep Kosher. For them, there’s always turkey bacon. Note to wife and daughter. I like my bacon crispy.
Cash
A wad of bills discreetly stuffed into an envelope is the perfect gift for any occasion.
Mug/T-shirt Proclaiming My Success as a Father
In the movie, The Highlander, when they said “there can be only one” they probably didn’t mean #1 Dad mugs or t-shirts. They probably meant Highlander movies, because after the first one they were all terrible. While most people think a #1 Dad item is a #2 gift, I disagree. I think it’s a rite of passage. And until there’s an appropriate father ranking system, it’s the only way to know who’s leading.
Family Time
Mother’s Day is often a day for mothers to get a break and have some time to themselves. Maybe go to the spa or watch a movie with Colin Firth. Father’s Day, on the other hand, is a day for dads to be dads. It’s time to celebrate with your family. Go to the park. Play outside. Watch a movie. Oh, and you should probably invite your kids along.
As this motley crew of a list attests to, there’s no wrong gift for Father’s Day. As long as you’re celebrating fatherhood, whether it’s a big celebration or a small celebration, we'll appreciate it. Just please, no more ties.
