Santa's Coming

the fatherlode: the man in red canada (Dec.22.11)

Christmas is almost here. Soon we’ll awake to such a clatter and find that Jolly Old St. Nick was there. Milk and cookies will be eaten. Presents will be left. That’s what Santa does.

This year is the first year that my daughter will look forward to him reverse robbing our house.

My two-year old toddler knows who this Santa Claus is. (But she doesn’t really know who he is, so shhhh…)

I’m not sure how she knows. She just knows. We never sat her down and had the Santa talk. Like pinkeye, it must have been something she picked up at daycare.

Lately she’s been talking about Santa nonstop. She knows Santa brings presents. She knows the presents arrive on Christmas (or Kiss-mas). And she knows that like a DJ, Santa takes requests.

Like all toddlers, my daughter knows what she wants.

“What do you want Santa to bring you for Christmas?”

There’s a brief pause to contemplate the possibilities. What would it be? The Elmo who plays drums? A Dora the Explorer DVD? Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Xbox 360? A pony?

Nope. None of these. Her response:

“Ice cream”

Ice cream? Okay, ice cream. She never specified the flavor. I’m sure the man in red can fulfill that request. He does live in the North Pole. The elves must know something about combining ice, sugar, and dairy. If I remember the movie Elf correctly, I’m pretty sure ice cream was an elven food group alongside licorice and gumdrops.

Her present will be easy to identify on Christmas morning. Look for the one melting through the wrapping paper under the heat of the Christmas tree lights. Maybe Santa will be smart and put the present in the freezer.

The request for ice cream wasn’t even a one-time thing. Every time we ask her what she wants from Santa the answer is ice cream. She even elaborated on the request.
“What is Santa going to leave under the tree?”

“Yogurt, cheese, and ice cream.”

It seems my daughter has Santa Claus confused with the milkman. I can see the similarities. Both are mythical creatures who leave gifts at your house and are often romantically-linked to the woman of the household.

The only difference is that Santa leaves gifts that won’t curdle.
