Don't worry. I'm not here to preach about how we're destroying our planet or hold a telethon George Clooney style about what a corrupt, disconnected society we are. (Although if Julia Roberts wants to come and answer my phone, she's more than welcome.) However, I just saw Avatar and it got me thinking about the world we live in.
For the record, I had no desire to see this movie. Once I saw that the characters were blue and used giant, pre-historic looking birds as a mode of transportation, I was about as interested as Project Runway's Tim Gunn is in sleeping with Heidi Klum. Then I saw James Cameron on Oprah and they were talking about the spiritual side of the movie. I was intrigued.
For the two people on earth who still haven't seen Avatar, it's a futuristic story about a former marine named Jake Sully. He's been hired to trick an indigenous population called the Na'vi into letting a huge corporation mine a rare mineral located on their land. Jake finds himself in danger and a Na'vi female saves his life. Captivated by her, he quickly has a change of heart and decides to learn how to become one of them. The fact that she was a hot piece of blue tail didn't hurt either. (I mean that both literally and figuratively). The Natives were all pretty smokin' come to think of it. I'd love James Cameron to create an Avatar workout video. There was not a muffin top or saddle bag to be seen! But I digress.
Once I got past the cheesy one liners (and there were many), I was able to marvel in the stunning visual effects. Life on Pandora was euphoric. But it wasn't only the vivid colours that struck me. It was the tranquility and sense of connectedness between the Na'vi's and the environment they lived in. There was a flowing energy between the plants, the creatures and the natives. They protected and respected every living thing that surrounded them.
Everything had a purpose. It made me think back to a spider I recently squashed in my son's room. In theory I feel guilty about it and know that it was wrong to take it's life. But leaving it would have meant me losing sleep in fear that it would crawl in my ear and lay eggs. I'm a work in progress, OK?
Just like Pandora, everything and everybody on earth has a purpose too. Yet many of us live in an unconscious state. And unfortunately I'm not the only one in this world who strikes when they feel threatened. Sadly, I don't think one movie is going to change the way of the world. But if we could just live in a more conscious state of awareness, it will move us closer to the Na'vi way of life. But until we all agree to adopt the Avatar diet plan, I suggest we forgo the loin cloths. For now at least.
