Readers' Road Trip Essentials

The August long weekend is just two short weeks away and we're in the midst of summer road-trip season. If you're planning on packing up the kids and heading out of town, while simultaneously dreading the, "Are we there yet?" questions, we're here to help. We scoured Facebook and Twitter to find out what items our readers won't leave home without. May their experience and wisdom help you on your journey.

1. I can't survive without a cooler of healthy snacks and drinks. When kids get bored we play the "Alphabet Game" or bust out the Nintendo DS. - @scarbiedoll
2. An iPad is all you need. - @adlibgroup_PR
3. For my four-year-old: a portable DVD player, MY iPhone, activity book, washable markers, stickers, [their] current favourite toy, a new toy, wipes, snacks. - @tykethreads
4. Fluffy socks for when the air conditioning is too cold for your feet! - @Business_Style
5. We always, always have snacks on hand. We couldn't drive more than 30 minutes without someone having a "snack meltdown." We keep our reusable snack bags filled with crackers, grapes and cheese. - Spoiled Sugar
6. Lots of snacks and drinks, including juice boxes (they travel well) and pre-filled Pez dispensers. We also bring a variety of music and DVDs if we have the players. - Charlene M.
7. Children's Advil or Tylenol and Gravol for the unexpected illnesses that seem to creep up on kids without any warning. - Adrienne H.A.
8. Snacks and drinks in a small cooler, sunscreen, bug spray and a stuffed first aid kit. We make sure to have music, both adult and child-friendly choices. I love opening my sons eyes to the classics. I also always bring his Tag Reader. I will pack the Tag in my purse for emergencies when only Thomas & Friends will do (construction and border delays). - Michelle K.G.
9. I'm bringing my answer in a different direction. Both of my girls are too young to read, but old enough to know what they like to watch! We love our portable DVD players for the car. The girls can each watch their own movie with headsets, so it's nice and quiet and gives us time to chat. - Jennifer R.
10. Baby wipes (for cleaning up spills), iPad, a change of clothes (in case of emergencies), snacks and juice, blankets (or back-up “favourite” teddy bears). - Jes W.
