Sacks in the City

the good fairies sorting sackscanada (Jul.31.08)

No one warned us about the mounds of toys with small (and easily lost) parts that would come with having children. The Good Fairies Now that we’ve added a crawling baby to the toy-loving big kid scene in our living room, these scattered items have us concerned. Then, as if by magic, The Good Fairies appeared before our eyes. Take these clever sorting sacks ($25), owners Maureen Kirkpatrick and Kate Hemblen told us -- and take them we did.

Three durable, unbleached cotton drawstring bags (two large, and one medium) hold everything from cars and dinosaurs to those pocket-sized dolls and pets our girls are obsessed with. Complete with a chalk-cloth front label and a special white washable marker, we’re writing out what goes where and drawing pictures for those who can’t read yet. When they outgrow the toys inside, we just wipe off and start over.

Phyllis Diller once likened cleaning a house with growing kids to shovelling the walk while it’s snowing. Now we can put a dent in the mess by teaching our kiddos the joys of “drawerganization.”

No fairy godmother required.
