Saving the Date

drop-in centre canada (Apr.22.10)

As we step into the coliseum, the air is electric with childhood excitement. The kiosks and souvenir and concession stands are bursting alive with workers selling their wares.

I immediately stop at the kiosk that sells the programs and quickly pay to have one of our own. One glance at the clock and I realize we need to get to our seats.

“Come on sweetie. We do not want to be late.” I tell my three-year-old girl. She takes my hand and we hustle to our seats, located just 12 rows from the ice.

As we settle in, her head swivels around, shouting hello to her friends a row down. The lights dim and a rush of calm comes over the crowd. The announcer bellows the story of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Disney On Ice has begun. Alexa and I are on our first date since her younger sister was born.

Within seconds she is on my lap to get a better look at the ice. “Look mom, Lighting McQueen!” she shouts.

“I see him.” I squeeze her tight. I feel like I am transported back in time. The smell of the fresh ice, stale popcorn, and the sound of the children reminds me of when my grandpa used to take me to shows like this. I miss the itchy sweaters he wore when we went on our special outings.

As Simba takes the ice, Alexa announces she has to use the bathroom. On our way back we stop at the souvenir table, load up and head to our seats to see who is next up.

Ariel takes the ice. My daughter is spellbound; I don’t think she even blinks. The Little Mermaid dances on the ice throughout the story of how she becomes part of Prince Eric’s world. Ariel arrives at the podium within our view and waves.

“She waved at me, Mommy!”

“Yes she did.” I answer, preserving the treasured moment my date shared with her favourite Disney princess.

Because of her young age, she may not remember this day, but I will. Her excitement makes me feel like a kid again. At this moment, for us, it's the most magical place on Earth.
