Hiding the Afikomen

holiday traditions canada (Apr.18.11)

Passover begins today and for those of you who don't celebrate the holiday, one of its time-honoured traditions is hiding the afikomen (a piece of matzah) for children at the seder to search for.

Because we can't help but get nostalgic around holidays, we're sharing our family's most memorable afikomen hiding spots.

Liza Cooperman, Director of Content Strategy, DailySqueeze.ca
Our tradition is actually to have the kids hide the afikomen, and for my dad to try to find it. His very dramatic (but half-hearted) attempts to find it always elicit squeals of delight from his grandkids. And inevitably each goes home with a fresh $5 bill when he finally gives up.

Mia Shulman, Copy Editor
One of the best (and by best I mean hardest to find) hiding spots my Dad ever used was between two books on a shelf. He gave us clues in the form of quotations from the books.

Sari Little, Senior Marketing & Brand Manager
It's a toss up for first place between my Zadie hiding it in the freezer and my Dad hiding it in a decorative display box. Both took ridiculous amounts of time to find.

Gabrielle Johnson, SweetLife Editor
From what I remember, the afikomen was almost always hidden between the couch cushions -- and my super-competitive sister was always the one to find it and gloat for the remainder of the evening.

Samantha Speisman, Assistant Editor
The best spot that I can remember finding the matzah (or maybe we never actually found it) was in an empty matzah box in the kitchen. It was wrapped and hidden in there, which is a place we never EVER thought to look. If you want to send the kids on a search for hours, then this is your spot.
