Hey...Is Mom There?
drop-in centre: mom vs. dad canada
(Aug.24.11)
Mia point of contact with her family is her mom, and she's feeling a little guilty about it.
I love my dad. No question about it. I'd go so far as to say he's the best dad in the whole world (insert proud, childish smile here). But there are certain things only a mother can understand, which is why when I phone home and my dad picks up, our conversation usually goes like so:
Dad: Hello?
Me: Hi Dad!
Dad: Hey Mia! How are you?
Me: Good. How are you?
Dad: Good!
Me: Great...so...is Mom there?
There are times I'll phone to catch up with my father, and we try to go out for dinners every so often, just the two of us. He knows how much I love him, I'm sure of that. But when it comes to problem solving, planning and most day-to-day things, I instinctually call my mom. She's the go-to for phone numbers, for birthday planning, for upcoming family trips, for just about everything related to my family. On top of all that, we're friends. We chat. We discuss what's happening in our lives. We ask questions, share advice. I chalk it up to just being girls.
Still, I feel a twinge of guilt each time I call and ask for my mom.
Moms, do your kids ask for you over their dad? Do you feel guilty about it?
Dads, are you slowly building up resentment towards kids like me? Please say no.
Thought that was sweet? You'll enjoy:
