A Big Push for Labour Day
drop-in centre: celebrating labour day canada
(Sep.05.11)

Mia's giving new meaning to Labour Day.
Labour Day was first celebrated in Canada in 1872 when the Toronto Typographical Union went on strike for a 58-hour work week.
Did you know that? I didn't. And quite frankly, I don't care all too much. I'm all for supporting unions (huge Norma Rae fan), but I think the day has lost it's meaning.
Not only that, I think there's an even deeper meaning we've been overlooking. Think about it: Labour Day, labour, going into labour, pregnancy, moms. See where I'm going with this?
I know we have Mother's Day, but I think it's too general a holiday. I think we need to focus more specifically on the actual delivery, that truly mind-blowing experience, and give a little national "Hurrah" to all the ladies out there in labour, expecting labour and champions of labour.
So regardless of what Wikipedia says, I'm taking this opportunity, on this sacred day, to thank my mom for going through those excruciating hours of labour, not once, but thrice (so that I could enjoy the company of siblings) and to send kudos to ladies who've laboured everywhere.
Thought that was sweet? You'll enjoy:
