Are You Close with Your Childless Friends?

drop-in centre: parenting and frienships canada (Jan.11.12)

Mia worries she'll lose friends if she doesn't jump on the baby bandwagon.

Two nights ago, after listening to my engaged and married friends chatter on about veils and churches and being forced to watch two wedding videos, I confided to my roommate that I was going to lose my mind.

"Our friends could be getting married over the next seven or eight years. Are we supposed to spend every evening talking about this stuff for the next eight years?"

My friend laughed and replied, "Just wait until the babies start arriving."

Babies. I'd forgotten about babies. What do women love even more than weddings? Babies. What can women talk endlessly about, besides weddings? Babies. What's the one thing I have limited patience for beyond wedding talk? Baby talk.

Weddings were one thing. I could smile and nod my way through a dress fitting and cake tasting here and there, but babies would be a lot trickier to deal with.

Don't get me wrong, I adore babies and kids, but relating to my married and engaged friends is proving to be tricky enough, how could I (someone who is only just starting to view themselves as an adult) relate to a mother?

Rereading this sounds awful. I know mothers are more than just mothers, and should be able to talk about things besides their children (just as I should be able to talk about kids occasionally). Am I overly concerned for the future of my friendships? Mothers, have you remained close to your childless friends? (And do you talk about anything besides babies when you're with them?)
