Kids in the Kitchen

ask an expert: cookingcanada (Apr.28.10)

My daughters are always wanting to help out in the kitchen, so I was thinking for Mother's Day we could make a meal together. Any suggestions of what we should make?

Vivian G. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca, and SweetMama nutrition expert Lianne Phillipson-Webb answered;

Here are some great recipes that can involve your kids. They love to help and be part of the action, and although it might take a few extra minutes to prep, it’s worth it in the end when they gobble up their culinary delights!

To start with, get an appropriately-sized knife (I used a small paring knife with my daughters) and started letting them cut up mushrooms, which are not too difficult and doesn’t really matter what shape they end up! Broccoli is another good one, especially the florets. Show them how to do it and reinforce that it’s not a race, and to chop slowly to stay safe.

Bean and Veggie Kamut Quesadillas: This is one of our family favourites! Most of the cheese gets eaten before it makes it to the bowl, but I count that as part of their meal.

Organic Rice Crisp Surprise Squares
: These "snacks", as they are called in my house, are always in high demand. All kids love the measuring, stirring, and pouring of the cereal at the end. And, of course, licking the wooden spoon after it’s all done. You might want to make double the recipe as they can be frozen in the tray or freezer bag and saved for later.
