I'm expecting in the fall, and am worried about introducing my newborn to my pets. What can I do to make it a smooth transition?

When introducing your pet to a new baby, it's important to allow them to see the changes going on around the house. Allow them to see what's changing in preparation for the newborn's arrival. Allow your pet to sniff around and explore.
If you have a dog, it's critical not to allow them on any furniture. This can create a territorial issue, causing your dog to challenge anyone in the home (including a baby).
It's also important to make sure that your dog is being socialized and getting exercise during this time. When you first bring a child into the home, many dogs will want to sniff and explore the baby. Allow them to do it, but think about whether or not your dog is the jealous type. This can play into whether your dog likes or doesn't like the new addition.
Balance is critical. Make sure your pets do not feel left out. Make time for both your new baby and your dog. Always be cautious, as pets' behaviour can always change.
