How do I choose a kid-friendly dentist?
Stephanie C. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca, and dentist Dr Sheldon Little answered:
Choosing a dentist for your child depends on several factors, including the nature of your child; some kids are very relaxed, while others are uncomfortable at any medical office.
Before any first visit to a dentist try to explain to the child what the purpose of the visit is. There are many helpful books for children that parents can read with them, that explain what a dentist is and what the experience will be like.
Many general practices are family friendly and encourage all members of a family to attend one office. Ask your dentist how they manage kids from an early age. To ease them into the process, bring your child along for a look at the office during one of your check-up visits. Making it a positive and comfortable experience from the beginning will help - let them have a ride in the chair!
Periodontists are dental specialists dealing with specific child needs. These can include more complex treatment and management cooperation issues.
If you are not sure where to take your child, ask friends and neighbours for a referral to an office they are happy with. You can always phone them up and ask if you can have a tour of the office and meet the staff and dentist. Many offices will be glad to hear from you.
Provincial dental associations can also provide you with a list of general and specialist dentist in your neighbourhood.
