With the new school year just around the corner, we started wondering, when do most kids start walking to school alone? So we asked our readers and here’s what we heard back from Twitter and Facebook:
“My kids went to private school out of area so were always driven but I remember walking as a little girl to nursery school alone.” - @karynclimans
“As far as my husband and I are concerned - never.” - @sarahnco3
“At 7 yrs. Not by choice though. School board stopped providing the bus because our sitter lives 0.5 km away.” - @staceymroy
“10 years old. He started walking with his friends.” - Cristy May Dickinson
“[My oldest] JUST started walking/bussing home from camp this week. She’s 11. I think she’s still too young! Especially with no cell phone! But, while her dad and I were biting our nails, she was out there, forging her independence. Ideally, she’d be 18 before I let her out by herself – but then, once a mum, always a protective one.” – Marina Campbell, Office Manager & Executive Assistant
“[Ashleigh McKenna, Sweetspot.ca Editor & General Manager] was 5 - remember the trauma of arriving with little Mark late for primary? Now it's hard to believe I let you walk that young but the older kids walked with you also from the neighbourhood.” – Susan McKenna
“My son was 10 too. Though it wasn't fairly often as he preferred me to drive (I'm on the BC coast, and it rains a lot here - LOL).” – Lemon Cupid
“My niece was about 10 as well. I, however, was in grade 1 when I walked with a gaggle of kids from my hood but no parent.” – Nadine Silverthorne
