Applesauce is so easy to make, keeps a long time and tastes amazing. And with apple picking being such a great fall family activity, there’s no better way to make those hand-picked apples go their farthest. Here’s how:
- Wash and chop apples (you can peel if you like, but this isn’t necessary)
- Add about an inch of water to a pot, cover it and put on high heat for 10 – 15 minutes
- When apples are soft, drain the water
- With a food processor, puree or chop to desired consistency (you can even use a hand masher if making a small batch)
- Add sugar and/or cinnamon to taste (or neither – the sweeter the apples, the better so opt for kinds like Red Delicious, McIntosh, or Gala)
Tip: If you already own a baby food maker, you can do the steaming and pureeing all in one!
Not only is it a cinch to make, but applesauce also has some handy uses:
- Add a few cold spoonfuls to baby’s morning cereal if too hot, or if you’d like to add some natural sweet flavour (this is especially great for picky eaters).
- If frozen, applesauce can keep for years. A great rainy day snack when you can’t get grocery shopping (we’ve all been there).
- Applesauce can be substituted for fat and dairy in some baking (like pancakes and muffins) -- great for those who are lactose-intolerant or counting their calories.
