Does your wee one suffer from itchy, sensitive skin? It might be just dry skin, or it is possible it’s the skin condition known as eczema.
Pediatric Dermatologist Dr. Danielle Marcoux has some information on the condition and we, of course, come bearing kids’ skin product suggestions that are made specifically for eczema.
Eczema is a chronic condition (meaning it keeps coming back), that usually appears in the first 2 years of life.
Eczema can run in families (just like good looks or a flair for the dramatic).
Babies' symptoms include itching and a rash, usually on the sides of the arms and legs or on the cheeks. It helps to bathe them in a light, liquid paraffin wash (like Oliatum).
Older children and adults tend to get eczema on the neck, elbows or behind the knees, but can use specially formulate kids’ body wash to ease symptoms.
Cold weather and artificial heat or hot weather can cause eczema to be worse. Keep bath temps luke-warm and use this as an excuse to turn the thermostat down slightly and snuggle under one of SweetHome’s favourite cozy, cuddly throw blankets. Keeping the skin clean and applying moisturizer throughout the day is the best defense. We recommend putting a tube in your child’s backpack, or their cubby at school, where it is always accessible.
As always, speak with your family doctor for any advice if you think you or your child has a medical condition. For more information, take a look at the Eczema Society of Canada Website.
