About Jennifer Hamilton
Having learned to write before she could walk (or so goes the story), Jennifer Hamilton has finally found an outlet as our SweetMama Editor. Don’t miss her weekly victories and slip-ups as she raises a son who is almost as obstinate and witty as her; using snuggles, derision and propaganda to survive.
I try very hard not to allow the mindlessness of other parents keep me up at night.
I have read horror stories of what some parents have done to their kids and seen (as a former pediatric nurse) the results of too many of them up close. But still, I try not to let these thoughts stay with me. It would be counter-productive to my own parenting.
Generally I don’t even react anymore to stories like
this (even though I should). I just let it go and concentrate on my own child and the job I’m doing with him.
Then one morning last week I get sent a link to
this story. It’s not the worst one I’ve heard, nor the saddest. The children were fine after all, and that’s what’s important, isn’t it?
But I can’t let it go. I think the parents deserved some form of punishment. It’s not as though they left their children in the car for ten seconds while they locked the front door or while they paid for parking.
They left their children in a car in the freezing cold while they ate pizza in a nearby restaurant and the temperature dipped to -22 C. Pizza. In a restaurant. -22 degrees. Sorry, I had to repeat it because I didn’t believe it myself.
Would you ever do something like that? What do you think of this type of parenting? Is it as upsetting to you as it is to me?
