Tick Tock

me and my boys canada (Oct.09.09)

I’ve always prided myself on my ability to get a lot done in a short amount of time. Whether it was pummeling through my to-do list with warp speed, or having an ability to do things more quickly than the general population (I was the kid in class who always left the exam a half hour before it ended), I was always known for my efficiency.

But that was then. And this is now. The “now” of my life consists of parsing my life into two to three hour increments. Whether it’s stealing away while Teddy is with the nanny, or taking him with me while he’s in a mellow state (a.k.a. not shrieking), there is this limited window to accomplish all those things that make up my life. And what I’ve discovered is that many of those cannot be squeezed into a two-hour time slot.

For example, I can now go to the gym OR shower. Not both. Or at least not consecutively. Given my desire to burn off the baby weight I’ve decided to put off the shower to a later time frame.

Those to-do lists that used to be refreshed daily, now sit as Post It notes on my desk for weeks at a time. Plus there are now items that never needed to be written down that now take priority. Like “sleep” or “eat lunch.” These days, when a window of time opens up, my desire to relax quite often trumps any of the items on the list.

And what used to be a relaxing ritual, like going for a manicure, now feels like a race against the clock (and almost always ends with a smudge on a nail). Sometimes I feel like I’m on that grocery shopping game show, running through the aisles frenetically with the big clock ticking over my head, fearing that the buzzer will go at any second.

If only my life were an after school special, then everything would be neatly wrapped up before they could say “Brought to you by Kraft Singles.” But just like those "made for TV" movies, my life has gotten a reality check (luckily mine doesn’t involve eating insects or dancing with the stars).
