All About Me

me and my boys canada (Nov.27.09)

Most mothers will tell you that once baby comes, there is no time for yourself. I will definitely agree that your “free” time definitely decreases (I’ve already told you about my two- hour increments), but I do believe that with the right support, it is not only important, but feasible to get some time to do “me” things.

After spending the summer in a sleepless haze, I was finally feeling like a human being, and I decided to dedicate the month of November to making myself feel like me again. This included everything from dropping the baby weight, to primping and prettying (from hair to toes), and a few extras along the way.

First, there was the weight loss. On November 1st, I swore off the sweets (and by swore, I mean reduced it to once-weekly from once-daily), and committed to making healthier meal choices (farewell, French fries). As a result, I found myself doing something I really had never done before: cooking. After getting past the initial anxiety, I have to admit that I’m starting to quite enjoy it…and so is my family!

But as we all know, the healthy eating is only half the battle, so I also ramped up to five workouts a week, which I dread every morning but love once I’m there (and even more when I’m done!).

As reward for my efforts, I indulged myself with two time-saving beauty binges. The first was getting my hair chemically straightened. I have had the blessed curse of extremely thick, wavy hair, that can take anywhere from 30-45 minutes to dry, so for me, this was a most worthwhile investment. And then I went from there to no hair, by investing in laser hair removal for my legs (OK, those only take two minutes to shave, but it’s two minutes I’d rather have for other things).

Then, in between all of that, I had weekly appointments with the chiropractor, a visit to the naturopath and even a couple visits with the masseuse. Add to that weekly manicures, and a few hair blow outs, and I can finally say I feel like a million bucks!

Unfortunately it has cost me almost that getting to this point. And as much as I appreciate that I’m fortunate enough to have found the time and money to do all of this, I truly don’t know how people do this all of the time. It was fun for “me” month but now I’m ready to go back to the sometimes healthy, other times lazy, usually put-together other times disheveled, fun loving, sugar-eating gal I used to be.

On that note, I need some chocolate, stat!

What are some me-time indulgences that you just can't live without?
