What is it about guilty pleasures that make us feel so guilty? Everybody has them. My sister-in-law, a highly intelligent lawyer, has a penchant for the gossip mags. Stephania (our ever so talented Editorial Director), can’t live without her daily Grande Americano from Starbuck’s. And me? Well my current addiction is the professional blowdry.
This is a relatively new thing. This summer I had a moment of temporary insanity and cut my hair short (a la Katie Holmes). I wasn’t more than 20 feet out of the salon when I regretted this decision. And what I learned quickly thereafter was that it was even more challenging to style than when it was long. So what better to save me from perpetually bad hair days than a professional blow dry here and there?
Well “here and there” has now turned into Tuesdays and Fridays. But with all this doom and gloom talk about the economy, my guilty pleasure is sometimes causing me self-induced guilt trips. Should I really be spending this money so frivolously during these tough times? But the reality is that I don’t have any other major vices (I don’t drink, smoke or drink coffee, so doesn’t that count for something?), I’ve taken all the precautions to make sure my savings are good and fortunately my finances are secure.
We’ve all heard those finance gurus spouting about the thousands of dollars you’d save if you’d simply give up your daily latte. But I never really bought into that. If it’s the little things in life that give us joy, I don’t think it is always the best idea to cut them out. It’s not like I’m going to come asking anyone for a billion dollar blow dry bail out. And especially in these tough times, I think a little self-indulgence can do the body (and the hair) good.
What are your guilty pleasures? And are you curbing them due to economic woes? I’d love to hear your thoughts. We’re quickly working to get our comment area live, but until then feel free to send me an email.
