Mind Over Matter

canada (Feb.10.09)

I was moved to tears this weekend.  It had nothing to do with my raging pregnancy hormones either.  It had everything to do with my new favourite person in the world -  Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.  the pilot who safely landed US Airlines Flight 1549 into the Hudson River.

As far as I’m concerned, this guy makes the rest of us look like mere mortals.  It has already been mind boggling to see how adeptly he managed to mitigate what could have been a catastrophic crisis.  But watching him in interviews has taken my appreciation for him to a whole new level.

If you didn’t get the opportunity to watch him on 60 Minutes, I strongly suggest you check it out. This man can teach all of us a few lessons in life.  In a time when we’re surrounded by stories of greed and self-interest (a la Bernie Madoff and John Thain…those two make my skin crawl)
One of the biggest lessons to me was how remaining calm in the face of crisis can make the difference between rational thought and chaotic disaster (he said “I’m going in the Hudson” with calmer resolve than how I order a latte).

And while he still remains humble, his confidence in his own abilities allowed him to use each precious second to make life-saving decisions without second guessing (he told Katie Couric “I knew I could do it”….I don’t even have that much confidence when parallel parking).

But the part that put me over the edge, and leaves Sully on pedestal status, is when he admitted to Katie that he looks back now on the incidence on wonders “Is there something I could have done better?”. FOR REAL??  You just saved hundreds, and potentially thousands of lives, avoided any major injuries, averted a physical disaster of epic proportions, and he’s looking for areas of improvement?  If the rest of us set half the expectations for ourselves that he does the world would be a better place.

So the next time I'm having a panic attack over the crisis du jour, I'll be taking a lesson from Sully's School of Cool.
