Romance in the Afternoon

Joanna Track canada (Mar.24.09)

My husband always says that one of the silver linings of divorce is the fact that you get regular breaks from your kids, with the security of knowing they are in the care of the other parent.  We have definitely made the most of this.  From quick weekend getaways, to movie nights, to Sunday sleep-ins, we make the most of our alone time.

With the little one on the way, we are becoming more aware of how precious this time is.  And lately we have been taking advantage of my favourite kind of romance…the day date!

Remember back in your dating days, the first time you spent an afternoon with that object of your affection?  There is something so sweet and serene about the casual, laid back nature of hanging out in the afternoon.  It’s also a test to see if that guy likes you sans high heels and makeup!

I have to admit that our affinity to the day date has been driven somewhat by pregnancy.  I can’t make it to a late movie.  Or even an early evening movie (exhaustion aside, it cuts into my hefty dinner schedule!).  So the 4pm matinee has become our time of choice.  You avoid the big crowds, and are only mildly tempted by all the (ridiculously overpriced) treats, as you know dinner is just around the corner.

And instead of dinner dates, we have been relishing in lunch.  Where most of the new restaurants in town require actual planning (aka a reservation) we’ve been able to check some of them out without all the fuss.  This weekend we enjoyed an incredible lunch at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, followed by a visit to West Elm, (the cousin of Pottery Barn and Willams Sonoma...but cheaper!).  From a pregnant point of view, this is also a great way to avoid the plague of heartburn (big meals at night = big pain in the chest!).

My husband and I both agree that there is an added romantic factor to the day date that we both love.  So this weekend we “pinkie sweared” (that’s a major commitment in our house) to keep it up, even after the baby is born.  It may not be as frequent, or as long, but I am sure it will be just as sweet.
