My New Baby

Boy, how time flies. This week marks 5 years that Sweetspot was launched. And it marks 37 weeks since this baby in my belly came into existence. So for me it is not only a special time in my life, but also a time to reflect on the past and ponder the future.
Launching your own business and having a child have much in common. Both create endless sleepless nights, accompanied by obscene levels of stress and fear. They are both the ultimate sacrifice in time, money and emotion. And they both create an incomprehensible amount of joy and personal reward.
Also, once a part of your life, they are forever part of your life. People keep asking me how I’m going to manage my job while I’m on maternity leave. But when you run your own business it’s not a job, it’s an extension of who you are (it’s like asking someone how they’ll take care of their older child when their baby is born). So the answer is “I’ll just do what I have to do”. It’s a bit vague, I know. But just like raising a child, there is no rulebook or manual.
What I know is that I will still be kept abreast of all the major happenings at Sweetspot (although I told my team that I prefer to hear only the good news!). I will check my emails, albeit not the 100+ times a day that I currently do. And soon enough I will be coming by for visits (Junior in tow), and will make myself available to listen and advise as much as I can.
On the other hand, I am not a workaholic. While some women brag about checking their Blackberry in the delivery room, I am not that type of person. My philosophy has always been that my family comes first so I will be spending the next few months focusing my efforts on giving this little guy the time and focus he deserves. Luckily I have an incredible team here at Sweetspot which means I have the confidence that I can bow out for a while, and things will stay as sweet as ever.
And for now I will also be taking a break from my weekly blog postings. I will miss the opportunity to share my rantings and musings, and have truly enjoyed your feedback and comments. But while I’m gone I’m sure I will be amassing a whole new stock of material, and look forward to sharing it with you (along with some baby pics!) soon. In the meantime, thank you all for all of your sweet wishes and support.
Now, since I’ve recently accepted that the stork will not actually be bringing me this baby, I need to focus my attention on managing this pre-labour anxiety!
