Hair Affair

While we did get to one or two shows, most evenings during LG Fashion Week were spent at home with the little ones. Thanks to big sis Sweetspot, we still managed to get some expert advice from backstage. Official Hair Artist and Colourist for L'Oreal Paris, Eric Del Monaco, answered one question on every mama's mind...

For Moms who want a more manageable hair style but still want to be on trend, what can you suggest?

It depends, like I said before, if you have naturally wavy or curly hair, fall is the time to wear it natural. Even now, in the summertime, everything is more relaxed, you can wear your hair curly; just let it go in it's natural state. If you're going to let your hair go natural, it's really important to get a great haircut, something that's going to allow you to just shake it and go. If you don't have a lot of time (with a baby), you need something that's gonna take its shape as it's drying. The other thing that's really important, no matter what, is when you wear it long, straight, whatever, it has to be healthy looking! It can't be dry looking, and it can't be brittle. If you're growing your hair long and you've got this much (motions to 1 or 2 inches) at your ends that's dry, you know what? Cut them off! What's the point? If you have straight hair, again, it's the same thing: It's all about a good cut. Also, use a shampoo/conditioner that's going to give you body, or a serum to protect your hair. New-moms are often going through body changes, and sometimes they can be experiencing hair loss, so it's really important to protect the hair they have. A serum will really protect their hair from breaking.

The bob is also a great look for Moms, but if you're going to go that route, get an updated version. Get a really nice cut. Don't do the straight bangs, and the blunt version. Make it a really sharp cut, get some bangs that are angled, maybe some feathered ends -- update it.

Eric Del Monaco trained in London and Milan before he became Official Hair Artist and Colourist for L'Oreal Paris in 2001. He can also be seen lending beauty advice on Project Runway Canada.
