About Sweetmama Editor
Nadine Silverthorne’s love of journaling began in Grade One with the entry, “I am the greatest dancer!” Two babies (and countless diaper changes) later, she has found her home away from home as editor of SweetMama. Don’t miss her humorous bi-weekly accounts of the joys and pains of working while raising them fabulous.

potty tales #8 canada
(Aug.10.09)
When I get stuck in life, I do what many other Westerners do: I throw money at the problem. Surely there are some cute things out there for purchase that will get us excited about potty training again?
So I’ve resorted to books and videos to see if this will somehow trigger my daughter’s brain to do what she clearly knows how to do (but won’t do out of spite.) Here are some of my favourites:

Everyone Poops, by Taro Gomi
I always thought the Japanese were a reserved culture – until we read this book full of pictures that live up to the title. Great for older kids who think poop jokes are funny (a.k.a. dads)

A Potty for Me!, by Karen Katz
Karen Katz’s lift-the-flap books delight toddlers to no end. My daughter giggles every time we get to the part where the little girl pees in her pants. (I don’t find that funny.)

Sesame Street Elmo's Potty Time DVD
My daughter is obsessed with Elmo. I thought her desire to watch this video a hundred times a day would somehow brainwash her into being a potty superstar. The jury’s still out.

The New Potty, by Mercer Meyer and Gina Meyer
I thought the idea of the big brother narrating his little sister’s potty training would be a great psychological motivator. But I think I enjoy this book more than she does. |

Sesame Beginnings: Potty Time
Before I had kids, if you told me that there was a book with a potty full of illustrated pee you could flush, I probably would have rolled my eyes.
