About Sweetmama Editor
Nadine Silverthorne’s love of journaling began in Grade One with the entry, “I am the greatest dancer!” Two babies (and countless diaper changes) later, she has found her home away from home as editor of SweetMama. Don’t miss her humorous bi-weekly accounts of the joys and pains of working while raising them fabulous.

The week between Christmas and New Year's Eve is a challenge for many parents. Even if you joyfully filled out the holiday daycare schedule (hey -- somebody's got to tidy up after all the gift wrap and new toys are strewn everywhere!), chances are everything is shutting down a bit earlier and not available for as many days as you'd like.
I don't know about you, but here's how I'm planning on surviving this week.
Monday: Visiting Day. Daycare is closed so any cousins, great-aunts and uncles, who didn't make the Christmas cut, are getting a drop-in by me and the kids today.
Tuesday: Daycare is open! I signed them up since they will be sick of me after five days at home and missing their friends. Plus they'll be wanting to take their new toys in to show off. It sounds bad, but remember how excited YOU would get to tell your friends all the cool things you got? I promised my 80-year-old aunt I would take her to the Shops at Don Mills for shopping and lunch at Rose Reisman's Glow Fresh Grill. The kids could handle the restaurant (their kids' menu rules) but I can't do the Anthropologie sale with them in peace.
Wednesday: Daycare is open again. I'm taking advantage of that fact and getting down to the nitty gritty. Mama's got a day of house cleaning and music blaring lined up. (Yeah, scintillating, I know.)
Thursday: New Year's Eve. We're taking some tips from Rebecca at Bunch Family and staying in. A few other families are crowding in, we're ordering Indian take-out, having a little dance party, watching the Newfoundland feed of the ball dropping and calling in 2010 90 minutes early so everyone can get to bed at a reasonable time (including the parents)!
Friday: Hanging out at my mom's to make up for the fact that I'm breaking tradition and not celebrating New Year's Eve with our huge family Armenian style.
Saturday: Nate turns FIVE! How have I been a mom for five years already? Mind-boggling. We'll take him to the museum or science centre, then have family over for pizza and cake later that evening.
Sunday: Check the backpacks for the necessary items. Do laundry. Then do some more laundry before soaking up the last hours together (without anything to do) before the madness of real life resumes on Monday.
Happy New Year everyone! I wish you continued health and happiness in the new year and, well, less busy-ness.
