About Sweetmama Editor

Nadine Silverthorne’s love of journaling began in Grade One with the entry, “I am the greatest dancer!” Two babies (and countless diaper changes) later, she has found her home away from home as editor of SweetMama. Don’t miss her humorous bi-weekly accounts of the joys and pains of working while raising them fabulous.

Winning Designs

When I was 12 years-old, all I did was dream of becoming a fashion designer. I drew sketches. I sewed outfits for my Barbies and my Cabbage Patch Doll. If I found a wayward scarf, ribbon or old pillowcase, like Frauline Maria I crafted that fabric into something to wear.

Fast forward twenty-thrmephftsh years later and what arrived at my desk but two Harumika fashion kits (available at Toys "R" Us). The sets come with a dressform that has a slot in the back, so no sewing is required. Simply press the supplied fabric and ribbon into the back of the form with the aid of a tool (provided), embellish with stick on bling and away you go.

I took one look and marched over to the desk of my other half at work, Danielle. Having already tried this out on her little cousin, she guided interested colleagues through a Harumika dress-up 101. (She wanted me to let mamas know that quite a bit of pressure is required to securely feed the fabrics into the back, so supervision is necessary for younger fashionistas.) And before you know it, we had Sweetspot's version of Project Runway.

I present to you the finalists. They show the range of options this simple and affordable toy offers the creative child. Vote for your favourite look in the comments below and you'll be entered to win a Harumika Fashion Show & Go Set. (Read full contest rules here.) Bonus points if you suggest a celebrity to go with the look (it won't increase your odds of winning, but I wanted to increase the fun element).
