Do "Baby On Board" Signs Do Anything?

I recently saw a hip version of the classic Baby on Board sign. "Hmm," I thought, "Pretty, but does that make it anymore useful?"
I remember getting a Baby on Board sign at my baby shower. One look and I knew I wouldn't use it. Because really -- what do they do? Do they actually bring an awareness to a passing driver alerting them to be extra cautious?
A quick, albeit fuzzy, think-back to my own days with a baby on board and seeing the sign makes me steer clear. Driving with a baby often means your focus is split. You're checking the two-way mirror you've set up during the rear-facing years, or reaching into the backseat with one arm to retrieve a dropped toy or pacifier. You're singing "The Wheels on the Bus" 30 times in a row or frantically looking for an exit so you can pull over and breastfeed so this baby will shut the hell up stop crying.
So what do you think? Are these signs a good idea? Does it make you feel safer to have one?
Drivers: are you more cautious when you see the sign or do you avoid cars with babies for the reasons I've listed above?
