About Sweetmama Editor

It's Halloweek!

If you've got a kid, chances are you're frantically running around this week, trying to get everything just right for Halloween.
By now you may or may not...
- Have a pumpkin (or five) which may or may not need to be carved. (Done! We've got three on the porch, but I'm worried about those hungry neighbourhood squirrels, so I'll wait another day or two to carve.)
- Have spookified your front entrance or a window. (Done! But the kids don't like my understated taste and are demanding more.)
- Have looked at recipes, trying to figure out what you're going to make for a Halloween party treat at daycare, preschool or at a friend's. (Don't miss this fun video of me with my son as we make a Halloween Candy House, which tastes as yummy as it looks!)
- Have eaten half of the mini-chocolates you bought to hand out on the big night.
- Found yourself at the local costume or second hand store trying to cobble together a truly kick-ass costume for your kid. (Need inspiration? Check out our ideas for DIY costumes and store-bought costumes.)
For the first time ever, I'm in pretty good shape this year as far as Halloween tasks go. Oh sure, I'll undoubtedly need to run out for more chocolate, but all this planning for what we would do on SweetMama got me thinking early! Nate decided months ago that he would like to go as his favourite food: a carrot. One trip to the fabric store for two yards of orange felt, a quick stop at Value Village for a green toque and a Saturday night spend with the scissors and sewing kit — presto! We had a carrot. Sure, I cut the neck hole too big and had to make some needle and thread adjustments, giving the sleeves a sort of Balenciaga quality. But hey, it still looks like a carrot and my kid is happy, so I'm patting myself on the back.
Lucy on the other hand was certain she wanted to be a princess a week ago. But when getting dressed for a Halloween party this weekend, she refused to put on her princess dress. Been there, done that. Thankfully we had a hand-me-down lady bug costume that she was happy to try on. But now she's asking for a whole new costume for the big day. Peas, to go with her brother's carrot. (Why did I mention the idea?)
So it looks like I've got a couple more things to check off before I can relax... and then dive head first into holiday shopping.
Happy Halloweek! Where are you at in your prep? Let me know in the comments below.
