Are Second Baby Showers Tacky?
silver spoons: baby shower etiquette canada
(Apr.11.11)
Before you doth protest, I will admit to having a second baby shower. It was not as though I asked anyone to throw me a baby shower. It was not as though I needed more stuff. In fact, my second baby shower, unlike my first, wasn't about the stuff. It was about the amazing friendships I'd made with other moms since becoming a mom. It was about community and coming together now that we were all in "the club." Everyone brought a cute onesie and we had pizzas on a patio with sangria (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and an evening of great conversation.
But I'm not opposed to idea of a second baby shower as a do-over, provided it doesn't tax your friends and family too much. Many women register for what they think they need the first time around and then, after a few months of parenting a newborn, realize that they didn't need half of that stuff. Then they might realize there was a bunch of stuff they didn't register for that they could really use right now. So they re-register for the second child, hoping to fill in the gaps of what they wish they'd had on hand the first time.
Some women get pregnant with their second children and realize they no longer have all the cool stuff. The speed at which products in the parenting market change is faster than the switch-ups of John Mayer's girlfriends! Regardless, the second baby shower is becoming more and more acceptable it seems. Personally, when it comes to getting gifts, I think I prefer a baby-welcoming party to a second shower. What do you think? Are second baby showers tacky or nice?
To save you from the need for a do-over, I asked the moms in our sweet office to name their favourite baby shower gift received. Here's what they had to say:

Beaba Babycook
"I STILL use this, because it's the easiest way to steam veggies even though I don't purée anymore."
~Ashley Bennion, Contributing Editor

Skip*Hop Pronto! Diaper Changing Station
"It's a change pad that has a spot for wipes and diapers (I even fit my diaper cream in it) and you can fit it in your purse or under the stroller, so you don't always need to bring an actual diaper bag with you."
~Sari Friedman, HR Consultant

Black Sheep Quilt
"My friend Elyn’s mom makes these GORGEOUS quilts and has just opened up an Etsy shop. She made one for me and it was one of the best things I got at my shower."
~Bonnie Mo, SweetHome Editor (and mom-to-be)

Don't Forget Mama
"I never had a baby shower. But when I go to them, I always buy the mother something as well. For example, if I buy baby bath products for baby [Ed. Note: Ashley Bennion highly recommends this towel], I'll buy mother bath products or a gift certificate to a spa. Or if I buy a baby blanket, I'll get an adult size one for the mother (or a bath robe.)"
